Deputy PM urges better Net security

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan has asked the Ministry of Information and Communications, in co-operation with the Ministry of Public Security, to improve security of government agencies' websites.

The move follows recent attacks on tens of websites belonging to ministerial agencies. Hackers penetrated servers, which they infected with viruses to steal data.

Nhan called on the Ministry of Information and Communications to assist Government agencies with necessary security tools to protect their websites.

The ministry, together with relevant authorities, is also looking to strengthen national internet security up to 2020.

Incomplete statistics from Bkav Corporation, one of the leading Internet Security agencies in Viet Nam, showed that more than 450 ministerial agency websites, as well as those belonging to a number of big corporations, were attacked in June alone. Of those, 68 had the domain name gov.vn, which is exclusive to Vietnamese government agencies.

It was the biggest attack in Viet Nam since the internet became widely established in the country, and was four times the usual number.

Bkav internet security experts said most of the attacks occurred due to simple technical oversights, such as unsecured password systems or out-of-date servers.

Nguyen Minh Duc, Bkav's director, said most websites belonging to government agencies and big corporations had not accurately evaluated how secure their websites were before launching them. He said a basic set of standards should have been met, at the very minimum.
